Social energiser and star accountant
Jackson Vanderslot has always dreamed big, with childhood aspirations to travel through space. But, at the heart of all successful space flight missions is mathematical precision - from preparation to take-off and landing. It was this obsession with space as a child that first sparked Jackson’s interest in numbers.
After completing a Bachelor of Commerce while working at a small-sized accounting firm in Sydney. Jackson was more than ready to expand his horizons when he joined 280 colleagues at Pitcher Partners Sydney as a graduate accountant in 2016.
Jackson initially had some reservations about leaving behind a small firm. He had heard that larger firms felt impersonal, and although keen to expand his skill-set and move his career forward, he did not want to lose the sense of community. However, his reservations subsided when he immediately warmed to Pitcher Partners.
It was soon apparent that although the scope of his projects may have changed, moving away from the trade, café and restaurant industries to large retailers and high-end property developers –the sense of camaraderie and being a part of a ‘work family’ remained.
Jackson’s colleagues quickly became his friends, and he realised that the partners are not just figureheads, but real people who are always available for a personal or professional chat – just as they are with their clients.
With a passion for connecting people, Jackson was quick to volunteer to help drive the firm’s social committee. Some say there may been an ulterior motive, to ensure his favourite sports (cricket and golf) are adequately represented in the social calendar – a rumour he denies, but probably with not enough conviction!
With a strong social network, Jackson believes “there’s such a great sense of community at Pitcher Partners, that work and life merge together a bit. Life doesn’t start when you leave work.”
Showing that he is more than just numbers, Jackson even volunteered to model for a client with a tailoring business, being photographed for their promotional materials as they measured and fitted him for a suit. But for the record, Jackson has no aspirations to make a career change to modelling in the near future!
Jackson appreciates that the firm rewards its staff for hard work, and in turn, staff work hard for a team and a brand they are invested in. “Pitcher Partners has an instantly recognisable brand in the accounting industry. I’m proud to work here,” he says. For a ‘country’ boy who still lives two hours outside the city, Pitcher Partners accommodates Jackson’s needs with flexible hours when he needs them. “The team is supportive, and everyone keeps in contact. It’s collaborative,” he says.
For the future, his sights are set on a solid portfolio of projects and growing alongside his clients. “Hopefully they will grow as I grow with them.”
NASA Astronaut Robert L Stewart said that “the study of mathematics was the key that opened the doors to the universe”, and this was certainly the case with Jackson.
